An Introduction to Education in Indonesia

Education varies from country to country. Each country has its own regulating body in charge of maintaining and improving the education of the future generation. In Indonesia, there are two different ministries that oversee the development of the education system: the Ministry of Education, which deals with public education, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, which deals with Islamic schools. These two schools follow similar curricula based on the national curriculum, though Islamic schools integrate religion into their coursework.

All students are required to undergo six years of elementary school, and three years of lower secondary (or junior high school). Students are also allowed to enroll in senior high school in order to possibly attend either a college, vocational school, or Islamic school, and learn a trade, though these last years of school are not mandatory.

As one of the goals of education in the country is the development of national unity, most lessons are delivered in Bahasa Indonesia. Students are also encouraged to develop skills that they could use to aid the development of their country. Some textbooks also help imbue values by talking about famous people who have made significant contributions to the development of the country.
